Re: Rear Gear Ratio. Reply #9 - 04/28/11 at 6:14pm. low gear in a powerglide is usually around a 1.76 and a 4.11 gear gives you a 7.23 final gear, So in hobby14's car that gets them about 6400 rpm. SO redalert, If you want to bring you RPM up to 6400 ish, you need to find a final gear of about that 7.23.

However if you are cursed with trying to make it faster you will need a converter that will allow you to launch the car near your peak H.P. and a rear gear that will allow you to cross the finish line a few 100 RPMs above peak H.P. The PG used a front and rear pump until 1965 or 1966, although there have been unverified reports of a rear pump PG being used as late as 1967 in a Camaro.

Depending on the ratio you have now, you may have to change the differential to a 3 series to use these gears. The Powerglide has the same 1:1 ratio as the 3 speed automatics, so the final drive ratio will not change with a transmission swap.
